Heyyy! Welcome to my blog.
I’m Nami, and today we’re going to talk about one of the most important things in SEO…
Keywords!
Don’t worry if you’re new to SEO. I’ll explain everything in super easy words with fun examples. So grab your coffee (or chai ), and let’s start!
So… What Is a Keyword?
A keyword is a word or phrase that people type into Google or any search engine to find something.
Simple Definition
A keyword is the word or phrase people search for on Google to find information, products, or services.
Keywords can be:
- A single word
- Or multiple words
Example
Imagine you want to learn SEO.
Instead of asking your neighbour’s cat…
You’ll probably search on Google:
- SEO
- What is SEO
- Free SEO tools
- Best SEO course
These are all keywords.
Another example:
You are hungry at 11 PM.
You search:
Best pizza near me
That’s also a keyword.
See? You use keywords almost every day without even thinking about it.
Types of Keywords
There are mainly 3 types of keywords.
1. Short-Tail Keywords
These are very short keywords (usually 1-2 words).
Example
- Shoes
- SEO
- Coffee
These keywords have:
- Very high search volume 📈
- Very high competition
Imagine searching only “Shoes.”
Google has no idea whether you want sports shoes, school shoes, party shoes, or slippers your dog can wear.
2. Mid-Tail Keywords
These are a little more specific.
Example
- Running shoes
- SEO tools
- Coffee maker
These have:
- Medium competition
- Better chance of ranking
- More targeted audience
It’s like saying,
“I don’t want any shoes… I want running shoes.”
Now Google understands you better.
3. Long-Tail Keywords
These are longer and very specific.
Example
- Best free SEO tools for beginners
- White running shoes for women
- Best coffee maker under ₹5000
These keywords have:
- Lower competition
- Higher chances of ranking
- Better conversion
Think about it…
Someone searching “Shoes” is just browsing.
Someone searching “Best white running shoes under ₹3000” is probably ready to buy.
Big difference!
Real-Life Example
Let’s say you’re craving pizza. 🍕
If you search only:
Pizza
Google has no idea what you actually want.
But if you search:
Best cheese pizza near me
Google understands exactly what you’re looking for and shows more relevant results.
That’s the magic of keywords—the more specific your keyword, the easier it is for Google to match you with the right result.
What Is Keyword Stuffing?
Definition
Keyword stuffing means using the same keyword again and again unnaturally just to rank on Google.
Google doesn’t like this.
Neither do readers.
Bad Example
Imagine your keyword is “free SEO tools.”
Free SEO tools are the best free SEO tools because free SEO tools help you find the best free SEO tools for your website using free SEO tools.
Google be like:
“Okay… we get it. You like free SEO tools.” 😂
Good Example
If you’re just starting with SEO, using free SEO tools like Google Search Console, Google Trends, and Microsoft Clarity can help you improve your website without spending any money.
See the difference?
The keyword appears naturally, the sentence is easy to read, and it actually helps the reader. That’s exactly what Google wants
What Is Keyword Proximity?
Definition
Keyword proximity means how close the words of a keyword are to each other in a sentence.
Example
Keyword:
Digital marketing course
Good
I joined a digital marketing course last month.
Bad
I joined a digital class after learning some marketing ideas before taking another course.
The words are too far apart, so the keyword loses its natural connection.
What Is Keyword Prominence?
Definition
Keyword prominence means placing your main keyword in important places on your page.
For example:
- Title
- First paragraph
- Headings
- Meta title
- Meta description
Example
If your keyword is:
Free SEO tools
Good title:
10 Free SEO Tools That Will Save Your Time
Not:
My Random Thoughts About Websites
Google won’t know what your page is about.
What Is Keyword Stemming?
Definition
Keyword stemming means Google understands different forms of the same word.
Example
Google knows these are related:
- Run
- Running
- Runs
- Runner
Or
- Bake
- Baking
- Baked
You don’t have to repeat the exact same word every time.
Google is smart enough to understand similar word forms.
What Is Keyword Difficulty (KD)?
Definition
Keyword difficulty tells you how hard it is to rank for a keyword.
Higher difficulty = More competition.
Lower difficulty = Easier to rank.
Example
Keyword:
SEO
Difficulty: Very High
Keyword:
Free SEO tools for beginners
Difficulty: Much lower
If you’re a beginner, it’s usually better to target lower-difficulty keywords first.
What Is Keyword Frequency?
Definition
Keyword frequency means how many times your keyword appears in your content.
But don’t overdo it.
Example
If your article has 1000 words and your keyword appears naturally around 8-10 times, that’s usually fine.
Don’t force it into every sentence.
Write for humans first, Google second.
What Are LSI Keywords?
Definition
LSI (Latent Semantic Indexing) keywords are words and phrases related to your main keyword. They help Google understand your content better.
Example
Main keyword:
SEO
Related (LSI) keywords:
- Search engine optimization
- Google ranking
- Backlinks
- On-page SEO
- Off-page SEO
- Keyword research
Notice they’re related—but they’re not exactly the same word.
Using related terms naturally makes your content more useful and easier for Google to understand.
Why Are Keywords Important for SEO?
Imagine writing a letter…
But you never write the person’s name on it.
How will it reach them?
That’s exactly what happens when you write content without keywords.
Keywords tell Google:
“Hey! This page is about this topic.”
Without keyword research:
❌ You won’t know what people are searching for.
❌ You may write content nobody is looking for.
❌ Google may not understand your page.
❌ Your chances of ranking become much lower.
With proper keywords:
✅ You create content people actually search for.
✅ Google understands your page.
✅ You attract the right audience.
✅ Your website has a better chance of ranking higher.
In simple words…
Keywords are the foundation of SEO.
Without keywords, doing SEO is like making biryani without rice.
Technically possible?
Maybe.
Recommended?
Definitely not.
Final Thoughts
Keywords are the bridge between what people are searching for and the content you create.
The better you understand keywords, the better your SEO will become.
So before writing any blog, creating a website, or starting SEO…
Always do keyword research first.
It will save your time, improve your rankings, and help the right people find your content.
